Establishing connection...

One of my fondest childhood memories is Christmas in 1998 when my brother and I got “Walkie Talkies” for Christmas. We were both so fascinated by the “magic” of the Walkie Talkies; how they worked and how we could be far from each other but still be able to hear each other. The trouble with the Walkie Talkies was however, that they had a very short radius… I think you could only be within 20 or so metres away from each other, so if either me or my brother moved too far away all we’d be able to hear from the other end was  “Shhhhhrrrrrrr”.

The other thing about the Walkie Talkies was that if my brother and I tried to say something at the same time, neither one of us would be able to hear the other.
Needless to say how much of a disaster our first few attempts with the Walkie Talkies were!

Sometimes, our walk with God is similar to trying to communicate via Walkie Talkie. God is the same, yesterday, today and tomorrow. He never changes and He never moves away from us. Whatever “shhhhhrrrrr” we hear coming from our conversations with God are because WE have moved to far from Him.
The Bible talks about how sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2).Our actions that are displeasing to God, if they go unrepented for cause the rift between us and Him. But through grace and forgiveness, we can try to re-establish that relationship with Him

Another thing about our relationship with Him is that so often because of the noise and distractions around us, and because of our own stubbornness we do not give HIM a chance to speak. Sometimes we are so determined and adamant to have Him hear what we need to say that we don’t take time to just listen to what He has to say. The odds of you hearing what God has to say when you are speaking too are very slim. Give Him a chance.

So, how do you try to get back in contact when you feel so far and detached from Him?

  1. Establish a connection -- reach out and make conscious efforts to connect with Him. Talk to Him, be honest and tell Him exactly how you feel, whether you’re angry, sad, whatever, He can handle it! :)
  2. Read His word  -- Sometimes we are distant from Him because we don’t really know who He is. Get to know Him and  the Bible is a great way to really get insight on who He is. Not only is it a source of comfort, but it also contains His promises for you.
  3. Be honest and admit to your sins and shortcomings -- we all sin #FACT  and no one’s perfect : #FACT. God knows this and that’s why He doesn’t stop loving us because we sin. He may be disappointed but He still loves us and He knows that it’s in our nature to mess up.
  4. Repent -- turn away from wrong doing and make concerted efforts not to do it again
  5. Talk and fellowship with others -- it’s important to have people you are able to talk to. Sometimes just by taking about something we get better understanding of what we go through, but above all, we need to remember that life is far too short for us to learn from aall of our own mistakes and "fellowshipping" helps us learn from other people’s mistakes, experiences and testimonies.
  6. Be immersed in His presence -- attend church regularly, invest in good Christian music, adopt a constant devotional plan or Bible reading plan.

    4. Amen Tash... I hope the younger generation can try to gain this kind of knowledge for I feel they are so engrossed in all this fb, twitter etc stuff that they are not remembering God as much, I hope we can reach out to them before Lucifer destroys them :-(... You always inspire me, thank you so much..

    5. Beautiful...and practical.

I particularly like #6.. Most of the time we feel far from God because of the things we surround ourselves with, are about or are consuming. In the middle of rapping along to Lil Wayne or whichever other explicit artist ur currently into is NOT going to draw u closer to God. Neither is spending your evenings watching that raunchy movie/show.. And you best believe He is not going to be in your idle gossip and 'hateration' session you're having with your friends...

Soaking yourself in His Word, Gospel music, friends (and talk) that exalt Him, Church etc ensures your constant sense of His presence with you.

      Bless you Tash!

    6. thank you all for taking the time to read and comment. it means a lot to me.
@Chaka, funny i wrote an article on that... I hadn't found a name for it but i think I just did! Thanks for helping without even knowing it.

Kyunyu, glad to be feeding into your life. Thanks for the support. we all have a role to go against societal norms and impact positively the younger generation because many many of them are lost :(

Ange, so true girl. People ask God to speak and before they have even said "Amen" they already have Lil Wayne playing on the iPod.
and i like that "Soaking yourself in His Word" -- till saturation! The Bible is the one book that never gets old. You can read the same chapter or verse many times and get a different revelation each time! it's His gift to us :)
